On regular weekly bird monitoring in Škocjanski zatok Nature Reserve today (3.8.2012), 48 species of birds were counted or 761 specimen.
The most numerous were Black-headed Gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus, 224 specimen), Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos ,118 specimen) and Little Egret (Egretta garzetta, 78 specimen).
Other interesting species observed:
- Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) – 1 specimen
- Shoveler (Anas clypeata) – 2 specimen
- Teal (Anas crecca) – 4 specimen
- Garganey (Anas querquedula) – 4 specimen
- Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) – 1 specimen
- Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) – 28 specimen
- Greenshank (Tringa nebularia) – 17 specimen
- Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola) – 9 specimen
- Green Sandpipe (Tringa ochropus) – 7 specimen
- Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) – 7 specimen
- Black Tern (juv) (Chlidonias niger) – 4 specimen
- Swift (Apus apus) – 1 specimen
- Zitting Cisticola (Cisticola juncidis) – 1 specimen
- Melodious warbler (Hippolais polyglotta) – 1 specimen
- Moustached Warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon) – 1 specimen
- Penduline Tit (Remiz pendulinus) – 1 specimen
Garden Warbler (Sylvia borin, 1 specimen) and Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus, 20 specimen) were observed this week as well.
