This week, we recorded some interesting bird sightings in the reserve, including a Spotted Redshank (Tringa erythropus), a Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus), and a family of young Common Shelducks (Tadorna tadorna). The highlights, however, were two remarkable breeding confirmations.

We observed three Gadwall ducklings (Anas strepera), confirming only the second recorded breeding of Gadwall in the reserve. In Slovenia, the Gadwall is a very rare and locally distributed breeding species.

This year, we also confirmed the breeding of the Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata) once again. The species is an extremely rare and sporadic breeder in Slovenia, and this marks only the second confirmed breeding record in the reserve.

Observations like these highlight the importance of the reserve as a safe breeding habitat for some of Slovenia’s rarest waterbirds.
