Last Monitoring of the Year in a Frozen Landscape ❄️
Today the reserve greeted us with a thin layer of ice covering the reclaimed fields and much of the lagoon. In such conditions, birds tend to gather on small patches of open water, as this helps them keep the surface from freezing over and maintain their only access to food .
Among the most interesting species observed in recent days were:
• Jack snipe (Lymnocryptes minimus) – up to 3 individuals
• Corn bunting (Emberiza calandra)
• Northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus)
• Caspian gull (Larus cachinnans)
• Eurasian marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus)
This final post of the year is a lovely reminder that nature never truly rests, not even in the coldest days. Thank you to everyone who follows our observations – we continue in the new year! ❄️
