At night, the reserve is full of life!
Over the past week, we made the most of the short winter days to observe what happens in the reserve after dark. Even when night falls, the area does not fall silent – on the contrary, it comes alive in a completely different way.
Among the many bird species that use the reserve as a nighttime roost, the observation of a flock of 19 Sacred Ibises (Threskiornis aethiopicus) and as many as 77 Cattle Egrets (Bubulcus ibis) stood out. A particularly special experience was encountering an owl, most likely a Long-eared Owl (Asio otus), which uses the area as a hunting ground during the night.
During nighttime observations, in low-light conditions, we are assisted by thermal imaging cameras, which detect the infrared radiation emitted by warm bodies and allow us a glimpse into the hidden world of nocturnal life.
Take a look at how it appears in the images!
